White Collar Poll: About that Pager . . .

Gratuitous cap of shirtless-Neal-with-pager
to induce you to vote.
Let's take a step back to the season opener. With Ellen's help, Peter now has Neal's pager number. He pages Neal; Neal calls him back, thinking it's Ellen. He's a little surprised when it's Peter, but not too broken up--in fact, he's glad to hear from his partner. But he warns Peter that it has to be the last time they speak. And then we see him throw away the phone.

But did he also burn the pager?  The episode doesn't tell us. Do you think he left it active, knowing that Peter would then always have a way to reach him, as Ellen did, or do you think he tossed the pager too?

Edit: One of our commenters cleverly noticed that Neal tells Mozzie the pager is at the bottom of the sea with the phone--I had forgotten about that! But we only saw Neal toss the phone. Could he have just lied to make Moz feel better? (It's only Peter he sorta doesn't lie to. Or are we stretching too much now?)

Speak your minds, Collars! Head over to the sidebar to vote, and then feel free to rationalize in the comments here.

In the episode he tells Mozzie as they're sitting out on balcony thing that the phone AND the pager are at the bottom of the Atlantic, as I recall.....

@Anon 6:05--Oooh--I have to rewatch that scene as soon as I have a chance. (Although I don't think Neal would think twice about lying to make Moz feel better--it's only Peter he sorta won't lie to, lol. And we only watched him throw the phone away . . .)

Neal clearly says the phone and the pager are at the bottom of the ocean. As much as he might WANT that lifeline to Peter, he's smart enough to know it's too dangerous. He tossed it.

I don't think it's a question of trusting Peter with the pager number, it's about the fact that the number was called at all - there's a vulnerability there. Peter's phone records could be subpoenaed and Neal could be found, in theory. I'm positive he'd have burned that pager, even if it had been Ellen at the other end of that call.

I assume the pager is gone, and that Peter, like Neal, was using a burner phone. But that's not what's important to me about this incident. I keep imagining a day when Neal comes to Peter and gives him a way to contact him if he's ever on the run again -- I don't know if that could ever happen, but I dream of it anyway and what it would mean to both of them, what it would say about both of them.
