Rabid Squee: Diminishing Returns

Peter (Tim DeKay) thinks he has a line on where to find
the lost Ark of the Covenant...
I actually don’t know where to squee first with this episode. You know, you expect episode 3 after the dramatic, filmed-on-location, two-part premiere to be boring or rote or phoned-in in some way, but I liked this episode more than Wanted and Most Wanted combined.

The first word out of my mouth regarding this episode (right after the “YES!” I muttered upon seeing Neal in his bathroom) was “ADORABLE!” This may have been the most adorable episode of White Collar to date.

Allow me to elucidate…

That’s AGENT Burke: I enjoyed having a Peter-centric episode of a sort, and seeing the team (and even Moz) pull together yet again to “save” him, as in Burke’s Seven. But I really loved seeing Peter demonstrate exactly why he’s known as The Archaeologist – because he is smart and he digs things up no one else can while solving hard cases.

I love you, man: And yet again, I’m thrilled to see the (b)romance carried off so darn well in this ep, particularly coming from Neal, who is admittedly trying to make things up to his friend, but the way he kept bringing things to Peter (lunch, clues, a water delivery truck) to keep him in the loop in the investigation, reminded me of my Golden Retriever. If Neal had a tail, it would have been wagging.

Neal and Peter brown bag it.

I also enjoyed how Neal took such a leading role in the investigation, how even without Peter to provide guidance, he was able to make key breaks in the case happen on his own, and even kinda-sorta did it on the up-and-up. See, FBI, he is a valued member of the team! I really just love when the show demonstrates Neal's smarts like this.

Three Cheers for the Director: Thank you, Stefan Schwartz, whoever you are, for your work on this episode, and for the loving close-ups of both Tim DeKay and Matt Bomer (and of Willie Garson and Tiffani Thiessen, for that matter), and for the really great tracking shots when Neal and Peter were eating lunch in the yard, er, picnic area. Seriously, we want you back SOON.

I seriously NEED TO KNOW how this shot was done, Mr. Director Schwartz, sir.

Gratuitous shirtlessness too? We’re so honored!  – And oh yeah, we found out Neal really is his name. And that he thought his name was Danny Brooks growing up. And that he grew up in WITSEC.

Wow, Neal's bathroom is really cool...
Mozzie’s back - Whee!  As if he wouldn’t be, but I loved how this was pulled off, with him just showing up with a trio of Mongols in tow – complete with cunning furry hats –  drinking all of Neal's eiswein. Neal – that’s a lot of eiswein, bud, you get a good deal? I digress. The best part about this sequence was the obvious fondness both Moz and Neal have for each other, and I swear Neal's eyes looked a little misty there when he saw his friend.  But Moz didn’t even hesitate or complain or make any Suit cracks as he dove in to help Peter, even dusting off that FBI windbreaker he swiped back during the S1 episode Book of Hours. I am reminded Neal returned said jacket - thanks, JRo!

Retirement from retirement looks good on you, Moz.

“You’re an FBI agent, Peter Burke. Go get your job back.” Awww, Elizabeth is great, and though her scenes have been too few lately, she did play a key part this week, both motivating Peter to stay off the Pity Train he looked like he’d already bought a ticket for, and generally being awesome. Can we please have an Elizabeth/Mozzie scene next week?

Quotes of the Week

Peter: “Sunshine needs me.”
OMG, I don’t know what was funnier about this line, the way TDK delivered it, or the fact that the guy was standing right there. Oh, Peter, I love you so much right now.

Diana and Neal: “Ring shopping’s not really my thing.”
This is the point when you know a show is firing on all cylinders, and you’re happy to be a fan of it – that point where these kinds of lines are delivered, and you laugh hysterically because of the situation and the characters that you know so well, not just the context. I love you, White Collar!

What about it, Collars? What were you squeeing over this week?

I was so excited for this episode because I saw them filming for it back in April! I got to watch that first walk and talk at the beginning of the episode and the van scene before the take down, which was all filmed on the same day.

Anyway, it was a great episode and I'm looking forward to the rest of season 4!

This was a great show thanks in no small part to Jim's writing. Loved Neal loving Peter & helping him. Loved him stepping up with the truth about himself instead of deflecting. Love peeking behind the glossy curtain of NC. Mozzie is back & less on Peter's case & then helped him with those bloody cell phones. Gotta love him!
Loved the whole episode!!

I thought it would be a hard come down from "island Neal" in Wanted and Most Wanted which I loved, but instead this episode was great. I loved this episode.

Do you agree that in the Neal and Peter heart to heart this is the first time that Neal shows some sadness about being a criminal when he looks Peter in the eye and says "I followed in my dad's footsteps, I am a criminal"?

I tend to think of Neal as a Cat (so he'd be bringing Peter mice and birds?), but this mental image of tail-wagging Neal had me giggling.

Wedding rings: $1,000 to $2,000,000 and up, depending on the store. Diana & Neal sharing a Quote-of-the-Week: Priceless. (And add El with her elimination of one of the jewelry stores: YAY, El!)

All in all, a thoroughly SQUEEE-worthy episode.
